About Us
At EAR - Energy Aware Runtime, we believe the future of high-performance computing (HPC) and AI must be energy efficient. Our mission is to help data centers worldwide reduce power consumption, minimize their environmental footprint, and unlock higher performance per watt.
- Our Story
EAR is a spin-off of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC)
Our software gives HPC and AI systems real-time visibility and control over their energy use, and it is a proven solution already trusted by leading supercomputing centers across Europe. EAR is a spin-off of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). Founded in 2020 by Luigi Brochard and Julita Corbalán, the company was born out of a shared vision: to bring deep energy awareness to every layer of computing, from chip to data center. EAR began as a research collaboration between BSC and Lenovo in 2016. This early work laid the foundation for a software+hardware approach that delivers significant energy savings at scale: up to 50% in production systems. EAR was first deployed at LRZ’s SuperMUC-NG, one of Europe’s leading supercomputers. Today, EAR continues to evolve the software into a full-stack energy optimization platform for the exascale era.

Julita is a lecturer in the Computer Science Department at UPC and leads the System Software for Energy Management in HPC group at BSC. Her research focuses on resource management, scheduling, and energy optimization for parallel systems.
With a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UPC, Julita has guided multiple research projects and PhD students under EU-funded programs such as ESPRIT and IST. She led the technical development of EAR at BSC and continues to oversee its evolution and implementation across real-world data centers.
Luigi Brochard
Luigi began his career at IBM Research, specializing in the performance of parallel algorithms. He later joined IBM Europe, where he designed many of the continent’s largest HPC systems and pioneered energy-aware scheduling in IBM LoadLeveler and Spectrum LSF.
At Lenovo, he helped lead the development of Neptune™, Lenovo’s direct water-cooling technology, and co-developed EAR alongside BSC in 2016. His contributions have enabled energy savings of up to 50% compared to traditional data centers.
A Distinguished Engineer at IBM and Lenovo, Luigi holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and an HDR in Computer Science from Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris. He authored "Energy-Efficient Computing and Data Centers" (Wiley, 2019) and co-founded EAS in 2020.
Raphaël Brochard
Raphaël Brochard is an entrepreneur driven by innovation and sustainability. Raised in Paris, he moved to the U.S. at 18, earning a Bachelor of Science from Texas State University before starting his career in tech at Apple and Indeed. After a decade abroad, he returned to France to launch his first company.
Raphaël’s curiosity led him to start a new entrepreneurship adventure… He joined forces with his father, Luigi Brochard, and partner Julita Corbalan, to develop EAR: Energy Aware Runtime.
